The United Way Reading Buddy program is a vital volunteer program that impacts grade-level reading success for local kids in grades K – 3rd. This last fall, the Reading Buddy program entered its 6th year, supporting our schools, teachers and students struggling to read at grade level.
Today, two-thirds of fourth graders cannot read at grade level, and disadvantaged children come to school at least two years behind their peers in pre-reading skills. United Way Reading Buddies work directly with students on a weekly basis and have the power to help boost academic achievement for a child – setting the right track for a brighter future.
Currently, the program partners with the Chehalis and Centralia elementary schools. Soon, expansion is taking place to bring the Reading Buddy program to Napavine Elementary School. If you are interested in volunteering to become a United Way Reading Buddy in Napavine, attend the upcoming orientation on Friday, February 9th at 1:30pm at the Napavine Elementary School. (located at 209 Park St.) To sign up, please contact United Way of Lewis County at (360) 748-8100.
