December 22, marks the final run of the ever-popular Steam Train excursions for 2018. Eager passengers for The Polar Express™ and the Santa Steam Train keep dozens of volunteers busy and full of holiday spirit.
From Valentine’s Day, Easter Train Rides, Mother’s and Father’s Day to Dinner Trains and Murder Mystery Trains and the Pumpkin Trains in October, the year is a busy place at the local railyard in Chehalis. Over 45 volunteers logged over 2500 hours of volunteer service in 2018 to keep the train on the tracks. Many more uncharted hours behind the scenes have been contributed. In September, after nearly 30 years of service, Bill and Wanda Thompson retired from leadership positions. The organization recognizes the significant contribution the Thompsons have made over the years. It was noted more than once; the organization and community would not have this asset if it weren’t for the time and talent they contributed over many years. They are not alone in their efforts, as many others have also worked diligently to bring this beloved historic experience to train buffs and wide-eyed riders!
In 2019, new support and membership will be pursued as the organization seeks to expand and improve operations. Currently, the organization is being led by acting officers, Bill Deutscher, Rick Burchett, and Jack Eppert. Board members include: Ron Burton, Mike Beehler, Dave LaClair, Amy Wolf, Bob Prevallet, and Harold Borovec. The organization is seeking volunteers to help with marketing, events, and maintenance of the grounds and facilities. Anyone interested in joining this unique and exciting venture, please email info@SteamTrainRide.com.
A ride on the Chehalis-Centralia Railroad is a pleasant, scenic and relaxing 1-2 hour journey back into history. Ride the 1916 logging locomotive #15 through the Chehalis River Valley. Coaches from the 1920’s provide indoor and outside seating. This Baldwin locomotive pulled log trains for the Cowlitz, Chehalis and Cascade Railroad until the mid-1950s. The train departs from the Depot located in Chehalis, 1101 SW Sylvenus Street, across from the Veteran’s Memorial Museum. The train excursion operates Saturdays and Sundays from Memorial Day through Labor Day, with Saturday trips through September. Special holiday events are held throughout the year. The Chehalis-Centralia Railroad hosts the only Dinner trains and Murder Mystery Dinner Trains in the region.
