Rep. Peter Abbarno – Update

Peter Abbarno, District 20 Representative, was the featured speaker for the July Business After Hours. He provided a recap of the 2023 legislative session, including an update regarding the WA Cares Fund – a new long-term care payroll tax that began last month. Since this tax directly impacts both employers and employees it has become an unpopular bill with *62.92% voting to repeal it in November 2019. During the 2023 session, Abbarno put forward House Bill 1011 to repeal this new tax. Unfortunately, the bill did not receive a hearing. For those wanting more information and updates visit Abbarno’s website at peterabbarno. houserepublicans.wa.gov/

Announce First Annual Clay Fest

This is an event for the whole family. Come join us for the Clay Fest on Saturday, September 2nd from 10am to 5pm @ Centralia Open Bible Church/The Potter’s House at 902 Alder Street Centralia, WA 98531. This will be an annual mostly outdoor event in cooperation with Jan Nontell’s vision to help develop Centralia as an arts district. Clay Fest offers the opportunity to view and purchase a wide variety of pottery; from traditional to sculpture by local artists.

There will be a potter’s wheel and hand building demonstrations by regional clay artists (my bio and site – www.dangoddard.com). Jan Nontell with ARTrails will be there as well. I am a veteran ceramic artist, potter, sculptor, and also the new pastor at the Open Bible Church. We will be renaming the church and already have the DBA “The Potter’s House” and launch that on that Saturday.

We will also launch ongoing free Potter’s Wheel/Clay Classes for the community as an arts community outreach. The signup will be at the Clay Fest. We are retrofitting the church shop as the clay shop. There will be 7 potter’s wheels, a large electric kiln, slab roller, and lots of clay tools and equipment that will be a part of this arts community outreach primarily funded by donations. The first lesson is entirely free after that students will be responsible for paying for clay, firing, and glaze.

Come out and enjoy the beauty of what Washington clay artists have to offer.

PRO Tech Painting: Lighting and How It Affects Color

Did you know that artificial lighting plays an important role in how we perceive color? Both natural and artificial lighting alter the look of a color with varying temperatures. The paint color itself does not change. Rather, the reflected light bouncing off the surface changes the look of the color. As you might have noticed even in your own home, warm lighting gives colors a more yellow or orange tone while cool lighting seems to give colors a more blue reflection.

One tip for selecting a color is to get a sample from your local paint store you might be thinking of and paint small areas on many different walls to see what the natural light and the artificial light does to the color throughout the day.

Rainier Eye & Vision:  More Than Meets the Eye!

Dr. Mary Ferris and Dr. Angela Loeb opened Rainier Eye on June 19th located at 145 S. Market Blvd, just south of downtown Chehalis. It’s the newest addition to eye health professionals in Lewis County. Their practice is open to people of all ages and features technology to make the experience comfortable and comprehensive for patients.

“We believe that patients should not only be comfortable but have access to tools that help us preserve their eye health,” said Dr. Ferris. “Eye exams are more important than most people realize. When examining the retina, your doctor can see brain tissue, your vascular system at work, and indicators of auto-immune disease.”

Rainier Eye has digital retinal imaging to help our patients understand their eye health and how it contributes to their overall health. Conditions like diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, lupus, and even brain tumors can be detected with this imaging.”

Drs. Loeb and Ferris encourage residents to come by and see the new facility.

“We’re here to support the community with additional eye health resources and create a

welcoming environment that meets the needs of each patient,” said Dr. Loeb. “We look forward to getting to know our new neighbors and being part of the growing healthcare network and, most importantly, be a great resource for eye care in Lewis County.”

Appointments can be scheduled at www.RainierEye.com or by calling us at 360-506-5544.
