Nelson’s Furniture: A Family Tradition of Quality and Craftsmanship

For generations of Lewis County residents, Nelson’s Furniture has been a familiar name. What began as a neighborhood hardware store has evolved into one of the area’s longest-standing family-owned furniture businesses, known for quality products, friendly service, and expert craftsmanship.

Originally established by Tom and Patti Nelson in 1981, the business first opened on Harrison Avenue as a True Value Hardware store. Among the store’s inventory was furniture handcrafted by a local woodworker, planting the seed for what would eventually become Nelson’s Just Wood Furniture.

As customer demand grew, the Nelsons shifted their focus from hardware to furniture, eventually transitioning the business into Nelson’s Just Wood Furniture. Nearly 30 years later, the store expanded once again, embracing a wider selection of styles that included the upholstered furniture customers were seeking while continuing to offer the solid wood craftsmanship that built its reputation.

Today, the business is operated by Tom’s son, Nick Nelson, with Tom still actively involved in the day-to-day operations. Together they continue the family’s commitment to offering quality furniture, popular styles, and prices that fit a variety of budgets.

“Our lowest prices are during Labor Day weekend and other holiday sales,” Nick said. “If you’re looking for the best deal, those are great times to shop.”

In addition to sofas, recliners, and other upholstered pieces, Nelson’s Furniture carries dining sets, bedroom furniture, mattresses, bookshelves, coffee tables, desks, bar stools, and a wide variety of home furnishings.

One feature that continues to set Nelson’s apart is its selection of unfinished wood furniture. Customers can choose pieces and have them professionally finished to their preferred color or stain. Every piece is finished in-house by Nick, who has developed a reputation for his craftsmanship. The store also offers furniture repair services, helping customers restore cherished pieces rather than replace them.

Like many family businesses, Nelson’s has adapted over the years. At one time the store employed as many as six people. Today, Nick and Tom manage the showroom while two additional employees handle furniture assembly and deliveries.

“My hope is to focus more on the finishing work and eventually have someone else take over the front desk so Dad can retire,” Nick said.

Shopping at Nelson’s Furniture is intentionally relaxed. Rather than a high-pressure sales environment, customers are greeted with a friendly welcome and encouraged to browse at their own pace. Knowledgeable staff are always available to answer questions, but shoppers are free to explore without feeling pressured.

The business has also recently expanded its services by becoming an authorized U-Haul dealer. Customers can now conveniently reserve moving trucks while shopping for their furniture needs.

This year they are celebrating their 45th anniversary. After more than four decades of serving the community, Nelson’s Furniture continues to prove that personalized service, family values, and quality craftsmanship never go out of style.

Nelson’s Furniture is located at 1601 S. Gold Street in Centralia. The showroom is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is closed on Sundays.
